Importance of Maintenance Even When Driving Less

Maintaining Your Ford When You’re Driving Less

When you aren’t using your car as much as usual, it can be tempting to assume that it doesn’t need any maintenance. However, there’s nothing further from the truth. When your car isn’t being used, it requires a different type of maintenance than when you’re consistently adding miles to it. We at Joe Cooper Ford Yukon want to help you keep your car in the best shape possible, so we’ve put together some tips about how you can maintain a car that isn’t regularly driven.

Running Your Ford Regularly

While you may not need to drive a lot, your vehicle will benefit greatly from running the engine regularly. Generally, we recommend running your car every week for around 20 minutes, which will both engage your fluid pumps and charge your battery. It’s important to run your fluids (like oil, for example) through your car’s parts because the fluids contain anti-corrosion properties. When your car sits, the fluid isn’t constantly renewing that protection, which leaves your parts vulnerable to corrosion. Running your car will ensure that your vehicle remains protected.

Tire Maintenance for Your Ford Is Important

Tires have natural plasticity, which means they’re flexible. While this is a good thing on the road, it means that when your car sits, one part of the tire is constantly being pressed against the ground. This can cause flat spots on your tires, making them less efficient and more prone to wear. Tires are also slightly porous, so the air inside will slowly leak out. It’s important to both move your car’s wheels (usually by driving around a little) and check the pressure frequently.

Regular Services Have Time Limits As Well

In your owner’s manual, it lists services that are needed at certain mileage intervals. However, when you aren’t putting many miles on the car, those services still need to be performed, but at time intervals. For example, an oil change generally happens every 3,000 miles. However, oil can decay over time, so it’s best to change your oil every 6-12 months, even if you haven’t driven those 3,000 miles. We here at Joe Cooper Ford Yukon can help you know what service you need and when. So bring your car in, and we’ll take care of you!
